Introducing ASTM D2979 - Industrial Physics

ASTM D2979 is a global ASTM international standard method to measure the pressure sensitive tack of adhesive products.

This ASTM approach gives you a quantitative measure and is suitable for quality control and research purposes. It’s designed to inspect the adhesive mass and it’s suitable for measuring the tack of adhesives created for both rigid and flexible backings.

Adhesive tack testing uses

The ASTM D2979 method gives you a great way to test rapid-fix adhesives that form a bond of measurable strength soon after contact. In particular it’s an adhesive testing approach for products that fix surfaces together and can be removed from that surface cleanly, without leaving a visible residue.

The resulting tack testing measurement shows you how much force is required to separate an adhesive from the adherend at the point of interface. This ASTM test method should be undertaken shortly after the surfaces have been brought into contact.

So, what does the ASTM D2979 test look like in practice?

This adhesive test involves bringing the tip of a cleaned probe of defined surface roughness into contact with the adhesive. You do this at a controlled rate, under a fixed pressure, for a set time and under a given temperature.

Eventually the bond formed between the probe and adhesive is broken. The adhesive tack is measured as the maximum force required to break the adhesive bond.

The results of this ASTM test are not reliable if there’s evidence of contamination by anything from lint to large dust particles or thumb prints. If you observe any of these then the test should be discontinued.
