ASTM D2805 is an ASTM industry testing guide to measure the paint hiding power of paints using reflectometry testing.
The American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) is one of the most influential standard bodies in existence. Established in 1898, ASTM international exists to develop standardized test methods, specifications, practices, guides, classification, and terminology across a range of subject areas.
The ASTM D2805 paint testing method gives you a process to determine the hiding power of air-dry coatings with Y tristimulus values greater than 15%. With appropriate modification, it can also be used to test baking finishes.
This is a precise instrumental method giving results with an absolute physical significance without reference to a comparison paint. It should be used when maximum precision and minimum subjectivity are required, as in testing specification coatings, or evaluating the hiding efficiency of pigments.
Hiding power testing measures how well a coating can hide the surface of an object, or how much a coating will obscure a contrasting background color. It’s similar to opacity testing, but opacity refers to a film property, while hiding power relates to the paint as a whole
So, how can Industrial Physics improve your ASTM D2805 paint hiding power testing?
TQC Sheen Test Charts
We make a wide range of consistent test charts for testing physical properties of coating, lacquers and inks. They’re suitable for hiding power testing to ASTM D2805, opacity testing and spreading rate testing.
They come in a variety of dimensions from DIN A6 up to and including DIN A4. All of our charts are film laminated for an excellent solvent and chemical resistance and an even film spread. On each chart there is a section for filling out the date, time and test number.
Special designs are possible with quantities over 10,000 pieces per chart.
We’ve learnt a thing or two about paint testing over the decades. Now Industrial Physics is recognized as a brand that likes to bring new, innovative paint testing equipment to market.
We like to share our knowledge and we’re here to help you to answer your questions about paint testing. Across the knowledgebase section of our website we publish lots of blogs on related subjects.
First up, why not try this blog that explores the different types of paint impact testing equipment? Then you could try this one which describes how to protect your coating performance with scratch hardness testing.
