ASTM D2794 and ASTM G15

Introducing ASTM D2794 and ASTM G15 – Industrial Physics

ASTM D2794 and ASTM G15 are international ASTM testing methods to evaluate the impact resistance of pipeline coatings through a falling weight test.

The American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) is one of the most influential standard bodies in existence. Established in 1898, ASTM international exists to develop standardized test methods, specifications, practices, guides, classification, and terminology across a range of subject areas.

The ability of a pipe coating to resist mechanical damage during shipping, handling, and installation depends upon its impact resistance. When you coat substrates with paints or varnishes, they will naturally endure damage from the environment, or their use in service, over the years.

The ASTM D2794 coating impact test is often carried out in conjunction with tests like ASTM G15. ASTM G15 – withdrawn in 2010 – dealt with simulating corrosion conditions to pipe samples, to represent how they would respond to real world conditions, over time. Talk to us about the other testing standards you could look at for this purpose.

The ASTM D2794 impact testing process

ASTM D2794 enables you to accurately determine the energy required to rupture coatings applied to pipe samples, under specified conditions of impact from a falling weight. These test methods provide a systematic means for screening coating materials for their impact resistance properties.

The ASTM D2794 impact testing method covers a procedure for rapidly deforming and measuring how a coating film and its substrate respond to the force deployed.

This ASTM test involves applying organic coatings to pipeline samples and dropping a standard weight from a specified distance. The aim of this is to deform and induce an indent to the coating and substrate.

By increasing the distance that the weight is dropped from, and repeating the test, you can determine the point where failure occurs. You’ll typically find that paint films crack when they break and you can enhance your ability to visualize and analyze the damage by using a magnifier. This can include copper sulfate or a pin-hole detector. You can also use stereoscopic evaluations to gain a clearer and more complete understanding.

When you’re impact testing through ASTM D2794 and using numerical values then you should do all your tests in one laboratory. This is because of the poor reproducibility of the method. Interlaboratory agreement is improved when ranking is used in place of numerical values.
