ASTM D2486

Introducing ASTM D2486 - Industrial Physics
ASTM D2486 is a global ASTM international standard method to measure the scrub resistance of wall paints.

So, what is scrub resistance in this context? It’s an ASTM procedure for determining the resistance of wall paints to erosion caused by scrubbing.

Coated surfaces need to be tested for resistance to abrasion in several ways. Fortunately,  an abrasion tester produces repeatable, controlled conditions that will simulate everyday use and wear patterns. For the ASTM D2486 scrub test you’ll need an abrasion testing device with a bristle brush and an abrasive scrub medium.

ASTM D2486 is not about stain removal or removing scuff marks from a painted surface - there are separate ASTM available tests for this.
The ASTM D2486 testing process
This ASTM standard is a scrub test for paints. There are two methods to follow in ASTM D2486: method A and method B.

ASTM D2486 test method A - cycles-to-failure obtained on test paint.

ASTM D2486 method A measures a scrub count to total film removal using the traditional cycles-to-failure concept.

There are a number of potential variables that can influence the results of the scrub test. These include variations in the stiffness of the brush bristles and condition of washability tester, as well as application and drying conditions.

In an attempt to improve reproducibility, ASTM D2486 test method B was developed.

While method A measures a scrub count to total film removal, method B requires a control paint. The results from method B are not a cycle count but a percentage of the control scrub count.

So, how can Industrial Physics improve your ASTM D2486 testing?

Scrub Abrasion and Washability Tester

The TQC Sheen scrub abrasion and washability tester is used to inspect the resistance of paint, varnish or coatings to scratching, wearing, and color loss due to wet or dry abrasion. It achieves this with a scrub test that simulates everyday wear from cleaning actions or general use.

The scrub test is either set up as a ‘pass or fail’ approach by testing to a specified number of strokes. Or it’s decided by observing the minimum number of strokes at which a coating fails by checking at regular intervals.

Our scrub abrasion and washability testers are suitable for a wide range of scrub, abrasion and washability tests to ASTM standards. This accurate and easy to use modular system can significantly reduce laboratory costs.
