Introducing ASTM D2354 – Industrial Physics

ASTM D2354 is an ASTM international standard specification to inspect the minimum film formation temperatures (MFFT) of emulsion vehicles.

This temperature testing method helps you to determine the minimum temperature at which emulsion vehicles coalesce to form continuous films.

What does a satisfactory film integrity process for an emulsion coating look like? Well, as the aqueous phase evaporates the resinous portion of the vehicle coalesces into a continuous film. When you test at low temperatures you impair the fluidity of the resin particles. This impacts upon their ability to coalesce.

Vehicles that can withstand low temperatures are preferred and MFFT is an important quality feature of emulsion vehicles.

The ASTM D2354 test method is limited to emulsions having minimum film formation temperatures below 90°C. The term ‘emulsion’ in this test method includes latex vehicles.

So, how can Industrial Physics improve your ASTM D2354 testing?

TQC Sheen MFFT-Minimum Film Forming Temperature Bar

The minimum film forming temperature (MFFT) is the lowest temperature at which an emulsion, latex or adhesive will uniformly coalesce when applied on a substrate as a thin film. Our temperature gradient plate will support your MFFT temperature testing to ASTM D2354 standards

When you know the MFFT you can be sure to create a product that cures correctly under the required application conditions. But it’s not only temperature testing this device supports! It can also be used to define the white point or glass transition temperature of dispersion materials, synthetic resins or enamels.

To carry out an MFFT test you’ll need a sophisticated test instrument; preferably one like ours with a ground hard-chrome plated metal platen to contain the specimen. By heating and cooling the platen any variable temperature gradient within the range of -30 to +250°C can be produced and kept constant! The platen is equipped with many temperature sensors and the temperature is controlled through an integrated digital touchscreen controller.
