ASTM D1894 is a global ASTM international standard method for testing the static and kinetic coefficients of friction of plastic film and sheeting.
This ASTM international test method is excellent for plastic sheet testing. Use it to measure the coefficients of starting/sliding friction - created when your films and sheets slide over themselves or other substances.
When you follow the ASTM D1894 procedure using a coefficient of friction tester you get two options: a stationary sled with a moving plane, or a moving sled with a stationary plane. Whichever approach you adopt for your plastic film and sheeting testing, you get the same coefficient of friction values.
To work out the frictional characteristics of plastic films they are partially wrapped around a cylinder or capstan.
As an option for this ASTM test, coefficient of friction inspections may be run at temperatures other than 23°C. You do this by heating the plane while the sled is at ambient temperature.
