Introducing ASTM D1653 - Industrial Physics

ASTM D1653 is a global ASTM standard test method for measuring the water vapor transmission of organic coating films. 

This ASTM standard will help you to define the water vapor transmission rate through films of paint, varnish, lacquer, and other organic coatings. It’s a relatively simple process using permeability cups. The films may be free films or they can be applied to porous substrates. 

As well as protecting from the elements and wear and tear and keeping water out, some organic coatings have to allow a little water vapor to pass through the film without damaging it. The water vapor transmission characteristics of coatings are important in assessing how they’ll perform once put to purpose, particularly with exterior wood and masonry.  

This ASTM D1653 standard comes with two options

The ASTM D1653 test was designed to show the amount of water vapor transfer through several coatings that range in permeability from high to low.  

Values of water vapor transmission rate (WVT) and water vapor permeance (WVP) can be used to rate coatings of an equal thickness. But only if they’re tested under the same controlled conditions of temperature and relative humidity. 

The ASTM D1653 standard includes two test method options to follow:  

  • ASTM D1653 test method A: the dry cup method is the preferred test method for obtaining values that relate to conventional dwellings where high relative humidities are not anticipated. 
  • ASTM D1653 test method B: the wet (Payne) cup method is the preferred test method for applications with relatively high humid conditions.  

You won’t get comparable results using different methods or test conditions. So, choose the method that most closely approaches the conditions of use.
