ASTM D1621

Introducing ASTM D1621 - Industrial Physics

ASTM D1621 is an ASTM international standard specification for compression testing the properties of rigid cellular plastics.

This ASTM standard approach uses compressive loads to inspect the behavior of cellular materials.

By observing a complete load-deformation curve from the data obtained it’s possible to work out the compressive stress at any load - such as compressive stress at proportional-limit load or compressive strength at maximum load. You can also use this compression test to calculate the effective modulus of elasticity of your samples.

Why test rigid cellular plastics to ASTM standards?

Rigid cellular plastics are manufactured in different forms for many applications. They’re commonly used in the construction industry as insulation, or to help with wall sheathing, waterproofing or roofing.

In addition, rigid cellular plastics offer good thermal performance and sound absorption capability. As they’re lightweight, these polymers are easier to transport and install on site than fiberglass alternatives.

The key properties of a cellular plastic product lie in its resin (polypropylene and polyethylene, its cellular structure (open cell or closed cell), and its density. Most manufacturers use polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) resins for everything from cups and lids through to automobile parts.

Why test rigid cellular plastics to ASTM standards?

As there’s so many different types of specification and potential end use applications, it’s important to carry out rigid cellular plastic testing. A compression test to ASTM standards provides a reliable way of gathering data for research and development or quality control purposes.

The ASTM D1621 test method reminds you to pay close attention to the specification of the material being tested. This can impact upon the requirements for specimen preparation and conditioning or even change the testing parameters.
