ASTM D1475 is a global ASTM standard that guides the density testing of liquid paints, inks, varnishes, lacquers and other coatings.
Density is weight per unit volume at a specified temperature. It’s a key property in the identification, characterization, and quality control of a wide range of materials.
Density testing measurements are commonly taken using a pycnometer to check paint quality in terms of weight per gallon. If the density is not within specification, there’s a chance that there was a mischarge or other serious problem.
The ASTM D1475 test method is suitable for determining the density of paints, inks and coatings in liquid form. It’s particularly useful when the viscosity of the fluid is too high, or when a component is too volatile, for a density balance determination.
Density testing devices have been used for resins and latices as well as for oils and solvents. If you’re working with nonpigmented materials (drying oils, varnishes, resins) and need higher precision, then ASTM D1963 is effective in determining specific gravity and density.
