ASTM C1427 is a global ASTM international standard specification for testing extruded thermal insulation in both sheet and tubular form.
Or to be more precise, it’s an ASTM standard for insulation testing, when your thermal insulation is made from preformed flexible cellular polyolefin.
ASTM C1427 covers two grades of extruded preformed flexible cellular polyolefin thermal insulation. These can be defined as follows:
ASTM C1427 grade 1: for operating temperatures from -150F to 200F(-101C to 93C)
ASTM C1427 grade 2: for operating temperatures from -297F to 250F(-182C to 121C)
If you have a specific application in mind following your thermal insulation testing then the actual temperature limit can be agreed upon between the manufacturer and the purchaser. Ahead of your thermal insulation test, the manufacturer should also be able to help you with information on the specific performance of their product - at the thickness you need for your intended thermal insulation application.
ASTM C1427 gives you information on thermal insulation materials that are governed by well-defined fire performance codes and standards.
It’s an ASTM standard that covers the mandatory physical properties of preformed thermal insulation, which have been deemed essential for thermal insulation design.
Physical properties for this thermal insulation test include density and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) which are deemed mandatory for thermal insulation design. You can follow the ASTM C1427 standard for thermal conductivity testing and explore properties such as water vapor permeability and linear shrinkage.
The ASTM C1427 standard includes a list of non-mandatory physical properties, but these are included for information purposes only.
