Introducing ASTM A630 - Industrial Physics

ASTM A630 is a global ASTM standard tin plate test method to determine tin coating weights for electrolytic tin plates. 

ASTM A630 test methods 

Within the ASTM A630 standard there are four tin plate test methods to determine the tin coating weights. These are typical methods that represent those most commonly used in the tin plate industry and are described in the ASTM A630 documents: 

  • The Bendix test method 
  • The constant-current, electrolytic test method (referee method) 
  • The Sellar's test method 
  • The Titration test method. 

This ASTM tin plate testing method reveals the total tin in the sample tested, instead of focusing on one side or the other. So it’s assumed that the tin is uniformly distributed over the two surfaces.  

It’s worth noting that ASTM A630 also does not differentiate between free tin on the tinplate surface, tin combined with iron in the intermediate alloy layer, or tin alloyed with the steel as a residual tramp element, 

Publication of these tin plate test methods isn’t intended to preclude other control purpose methods, such as using X-ray fluorescence measurement systems.
