ASTM A370 is an ASTM industry standard that’s used as a guide for the mechanical tensile strength testing of steel, stainless steel, and related alloy products.
The American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) is one of the most influential standard bodies in existence. Established in 1898, ASTM international exists to develop standardized test methods, specifications, practices, guides, classification, and terminology across a range of subject areas.
ASTM A370 is one of the most broadly recognized and encompassing standards to measure metal tensile strength. It’s used across many industries, including construction and automotive manufacturing, where safety is dependent on the quality of materials.
In addition to tension tests, the ASTM A370 standard also outlines Charpy impact, bend, and both Brinell and Rockwell hardness tests on metals. The ASTM A370 steel testing methods are often used to guide incoming material acceptance testing by the purchaser, or evaluation of components after service exposure.
These steel tests include guidance on analyzing the steel condition, creating appropriate samples, the frequency of tests and other test parameters.
When you’re mechanical testing metals, deviations from specification limits or expected properties can occur for valid reasons besides deficiency of the original as-fabricated product. Some of the factors to consider when metal testing include:
So, how can Industrial Physics improve your ASTM A370 steel testing?
United Testing Deluxe Action Wedge Grip
Made by our materials handling specialist brand United Testing, our deluxe action wedge grips are available in different sizes and selected based on your capacity requirement or your sample size. The grip jaws move up or down with a T-handle that tightens them onto your sample for a tighter grip.
United Testing A-60 Wedge Grips
Our A-60 lever action wedge grips, from United Testing, are ideal for tensile testing both flat or round steel samples, and samples made from other materials.
At IP we’ve been supporting metal manufacturers and users to test their products for over half a century. From copper to steel testing, you’ll find equipment to give you the results you need. We can also test alloys, aluminum and composites – so you can make sure you have the chance to find the right material for the job.
We like to share our knowledge and, across the knowledgebase section of our website, we publish lots of blogs on related subjects. For example, why not have a look at this blog on understanding elongation and tensile strength testing? Then you could try this one on how to test aluminum cans: ensuring quality in metal packaging.
