Introducing Appita/AS 1301.407s - Industrial Physics

Appita/AS 1301.407s is an Appita testing method to inspect the ring crush resistance of paper and board samples.  

Appita is the leading not-for-profit industry association that supports the advancement of the pulp, paper packaging and bioproducts industries. 

Why is crush resistance testing important?

Fiberboard shipping containers can be subjected to loads while in normal use, which are resisted by their compression strength. If you can understand this important performance characteristic then you’ll enjoy increased control over the manufacturing process and your ability to measure the quality of your finished product.  

The Appita/AS 1301.407s ring crush test approach  

The Appita/AS 1301.407s crush testing approach is for paper and board compression of samples up to an average thickness of up to 1000 µm. 

The Appita crush test begins by supporting a test piece of paper or board in a ring-shaped holder. Once it’s safely secured it’s time to apply edgewise compression force between the platens of a crush testing machine. The force required to collapse the test piece is measured. 

Appita/AS 1301.407s testing definitions  

In order to get up to speed ahead of an Appita/AS 1301.407s ring crush resistance test you’d be wise to get up to speed with a few definitions:  

  • MD ring crush: the result of the test made on a test piece cut nominally 152mm in the cross-machine direction (CD) by 12.7mm in the machine direction (MD). 
  • CD ring crush: The result of the test made on a test piece cut nominally 152mm MD by 12.7mm CD. 
  • Liner or fair side: The side of the paper or board which is intended as the outside or exposed surface of the converted product.
