Why is score residual measurement important? 

In the competitive world of food and beverage manufacture, you must guarantee the quality and safety of your products. To achieve this, while effectively promoting your brand, you need uniformly perfect aluminum, steel and tinplate cans. 

In order to ensure proper functionality of a can, the score residual must be within precise tolerance – this is a critical measurement for can end makers. If the score is too thick or thin, then it will impact a customer’s ability to pop open a can’s tab safely and successfully.

The Torus Z606 is incredibly easy to use. Just set the measurement positions you’re interested in using a drag-and-drop interface on an image of the can end. 

The bespoke algorithms analyze up to 2.3 million data points per scan to provide accurate score residual thickness measurements. Scans complete, you get the following results:   

  • Instant pass and fail feedback, based on your parameters 
  • Graphical section plots showing the score profile – for lifetime monitoring 
  • 3D data for output so you can perform detailed analysis and evaluation. 

Unprecedented precision and data collection 

The Torus Z606 is extremely precise. With precision levels of less than 1 micron, users are able to obtain incredibly detailed analysis of their residual scores. When you consider that a human hair is around 70 microns, you get a picture of how advanced our dual sensor technology really is! 

Our R&D team achieved this feat with the power of white light scanning interferometry technology. This is combined with a narrow band light source and a high-resolution voice coil positioning slide so the upper and lower surfaces of the score area can be scanned with high-resolution.

Each automatic score inspection gauge features two interferometry sensors that scan the 2.3 million surface data points. By combining vertical scanning with X, Y area scans, it achieves unprecedented resolution with each and every residual thickness measurement.

Machine vision loading for enhanced scans 

The Torus Z606 uses enhanced machine vision technology to find the orientation in which a can end has been loaded to quicken the process and improve efficiency.

Multi-stack, multi-size can end loading 

The convenient loading system of the Torus Z606 allows you to load up to seven stacks of can ends per cycle. You can even present multiple sizes of ends, completely removing the need for any change parts. This all saves you valuable time and resources.  

Quality control process support 

In addition to offering unrivaled score inspection capability, the other crucial benefit that the Torus Z606 provides is that it allows users to gain insights into the lifetime of their tooling equipment. With the inspection data you obtain through the Z606, you can analyze the wear and degradation of your tooling equipment, allowing you to make better, more informed decisions about when to replace your tooling for residual scoring and potentially make significant cost savings.

How does the Torus Z606 gauge work?

During the score inspection process, each can end is automatically collected from a ‘stack’ and loaded into the gauging module with an integrated pick and place system. The measurement cycle is then initiated via the PC running our powerful GaugeXplorer measurement and machine control software.

With a live display screen that clearly presents your numeric and graphical results, you can keep a watchful eye over your can testing process during and after measurement.

We’ve also enhanced the GaugeXplorer software behind the gauge, giving you a clearer view of your score residual results. Alongside your numeric pass/fail data, you can now see a 3D representation of the score profile itself. Each measurement point is plotted across all three axes: X and Y map to the camera’s pixel position, while Z reflects the measured height. The result is a visual model of the score’s surface, so you can see exactly what the profile looks like, not just what the numbers say. This makes it easier to interpret unusual or borderline results, spot patterns across a batch, and build a fuller picture of tooling wear over time, all while keeping the repeatable, audit-ready data you rely on for sign-off.

Plus, the live data can be transferred to the SPC package of your choice.
