Dual measurement capabilities 

The TQC Sheen Surface Roughness and Coating Thickness Gauge is a combined gauge, as it has two measuring capabilities: surface roughness and coating thickness. The gauge is supplied with two changeable tips: one designed for surface roughness testing and another for coating thickness testing. 

The tip for testing surface roughness has a pointed end, and the tip for testing coating thickness has a rounded end. Each tip type can be easily changed by using an Allen key. 

Surface roughness measurements

Evaluating the smoothness or roughness of a surface is critical across multiple industries, both for before applying coatings or after application. Our Surface Roughness and Coating Thickness Gauge can help users determine how rough a surface is and identify any surface defects. Surface profile inspections help users obtain and evaluate the visual appeal of a product’s surface, how well a coating will perform, and help improve the quality of a final product. 

Some products and materials can have stringent surface roughness limits in order to ensure optimum quality. This includes ASTM D4417 for surface profiling of steel, which our handy combined gauge conforms to. 

Coating thickness measurements

The thickness of a coating or paint can impact the performance, appearance and overall application, so it is an important parameter to measure across various industries. With the Surface Roughness and Coating Thickness Gauge, users can measure and evaluate the thickness of coatings applied to substrates to a high standard. It is ideal for conforming to industry methods, such as ISO 2808 for determining dry-film thickness.
