CMC-KUHNKE QbyV SEAM360 Seam Inspection for Beverage Cans

The SEAM360 is the ultimate vision-based double seam inspection gauge for both two and three piece beverage cans.

Description

Developed by CMC-KUHNKE, our metal packaging inspection specialist company, the SEAM360 is a non-destructive double seam inspection gauge for beverage cans.

Conventional seam scanning technology samples seams at two or three points around the can. But, what about the areas in between the sample points?

Our SEAM360 solves this problem. It rapidly and accurately inspects seam thickness and length (height) for both three piece and two piece beverage cans – all the way around the can. It’s the first system capable of checking every point on the seam, so there’s no chance of missing anything!

The importance of seam inspection

Seam inspection is critical to protect against leaking cans and to ensure the quality of your metal packaging. With a high-quality, double seam inspection instrument you’ll save time, hassle and cost while protecting yourself against unwanted product recalls.

A double seam inspection dream

The SEAM360 can detect different types of seam defects such as:

  • Tooling and bushing problems
  • Dead-heads and chuck skids
  • Knocked-down flange
  • Droops and vees
  • False seams
  • Broken chucks
  • Seam gap issues
  • Overlap problems
  • Overhang
  • Seam bumps.

360° double seam inspection protection

The SEAM360 non-destructively measures the seam thickness and length (height) on 100% of a can’s total external surface area. Conventional seam inspection technology checks at two or three points, avoiding the areas in between. So, you risk missing defects when analyzing your beverage cans with the traditional destructive 2-3 cuts.

Superb seam inspection software

The intuitive seam inspection software clearly points out what the problem is and where it occurred.

Recall protection from double seam inspection

When performing traditional destructive seam inspection at 2-3 points along the double seam, you risk missing problems that arise as close as a few millimeters from your measurement

points. The SEAM360 measures 100% along the double seam and ensures that these faults are detected, eradicating the problems that follow when you ship bad cans to your customers.

Super fast seam inspection

The SEAM360 utilizes the latest in non-destructive optical technology. It provides seam inspection results in a fraction of the time it takes to do a seam test and with no operator influence on the results.

How to use the SEAM360

It’s really easy to use the SEAM360 double seam inspection device. Just place your beverage can in the dedicated space and start the test. Our seam inspection machine will rotate the can during the measurement process and will highlight any issues detected and provide easy-to-interpret data outputs.

Modes of Operation

  • Automatic – The SEAM360 automatically rotates the can while it tests one can at a time in a lab environment. The SEAM360 will produce a report and statistics graphs at the end of the measurement process.
  • Manual – The operator manually rotates the can for spot testing.

Additional seam inspection selections

We make a wide range of visual can seam inspection devices and accessories. For example, check out this SEAM60 model made specifically for food can seam inspection, the SEAM 360 model for oil filters or the 360° can inspection module, a highly accurate and reliable mix-up and integrity detection system for lithographed and labeled cans.

Double seam inspection insight

We like to share the lessons learnt over many decades of seam inspection at Industrial Physics.  Why not double down on your knowledge and visit our blog on how double seam defects can dent your reputation and finances, or this one that explains how to go about measuring a double seam?

Customer Success Story

Frequent seamer‑quality issues → Adopted SEAMscan SPC system → Faster checks, fewer defects, and stronger line efficiency ✓

The problem

Canning production line problems are time consuming and costly. At some point many food and beverage companies encounter an issue with the seams of their cans, as was the case for a major brewery we work with.

The solution

Our customer needed a reliable machine to measure everything from seam thickness, height and gap through to countersink depth and overlap. The SEAMscan SPC System, an affordable, high-resolution tool for double seam inspection and measurement, solved their problem.

The result
