Description

Developed by TQC Sheen, our paint testing specialist brand, our pencil hardness tester gives you quick and easy scratch hardness testing according to the Wolff Wilborn method

Introducing the scratch hardness test

The purpose of the scratch hardness test is to determine the resistance of coating materials or lacquers to scratch effects on the surface. It’s a useful test for furniture or vehicle lacquers, but is also relied upon in the development of synthetic resins and other film forming materials.

Generally, a scratch hardness test involves moving a sharp object under a known pressure over the test surface. The result can represent the value of the pressure required to scratch through the test material – if a scratching tool of constant hardness is used. Or you can choose instead to vary the hardness of the scratching tool while maintaining a constant 750g pressure.

The Wolff Wilborn pencil hardness test

One of the most common procedures of determining coating hardness is the pencil hardness test, also known as the Wolff Wilborn method.

Our Wolff WiIborn hardness tester uses pencils with a hardness grade in the range of 8B to 10H. During the pencil hardness test each one is moved, scratching over the surface under a 45° angle, with a constant pressure. An optical assessment reveals which pencil hardness test scale damages the surface and which does not.

We make a range of pencil hardness testers and the models differ with a range of weight loads at the pencil tip, for example – 500g or 750g.

Pencil hardness test kit

Our pencil hardness test kit comes with the pencil hardness tester unit, a set of 20 Koh-i-noor pencils, an aluminum metal box and a pencil sharpener. It’s also supplied with both a manual and a calibration certificate.

No fuss Pencil hardness testing

Our Wolff-Wilborn Pencil hardness tester moves the pencils over a sample’s surface under a fixed pressure and a fixed angle. This ensures the least amount of operator error. The pencils can also be exchanged to minimize down time during the test.

Pencil hardness testing to international standards

Our Wolff-Wilborn Pencil hardness tester will help you to carry out pencil hardness testing to the most stringent of international standards, including:

Pencil hardness testing portfolio

In the Industrial Physics portfolio we have lots of different devices that are designed for all types of hardness testing applications.

The TQC Sheen Pendulum Hardness Tester is an easy-to-use pendulum tester designed to help you determine the hardness of a variety of inks and coatings

Check out ultra-flat TQC Glass Film Application Tables. They’re designed to draw down sample coatings on test charts with a high degree of reproducibility. We also make smaller items like the Automatic Film Applicator to support your ASTM D823 testing.

Our testing knowledge is hard to beat!

We’ve learnt a thing or two about best practice when it comes to hardness testing to international standards. We like to share this insight with our customers through the knowledgebase of this website.

Here you’ll find some of the blogs we have published, like this one – which looks at protecting your coating performance with scratch hardness testing. Or maybe you’d prefer to read about Microhardness testing: the basics?

The Problem

When your customers must be able to rely on your inks and coatings there’s no margin for error in your test and inspection processes. So, settling for second-rate equipment and advice is a risky business!

The Solution

With several dedicated inks and coatings testing brands in the Industrial Physics family, our industry-leading product portfolio and expertise is even relied upon by leading paint testing laboratories.

The Result

Artur Palasz, R&D Director at Spektrochem, said:

Many of our customers appreciate Industrial Physics equipment, because it is a world-class apparatus that they know and use in their laboratories. Excellent technical contact, perfect customer service and fast order processing time are undoubtedly additional advantages that determine the choice of Industrial Physics as our permanent supplier of laboratory equipment today and in the future.”
