Instrumented Falling Weight Impact Tester

Designed and built with operator simplicity in mind the New Ray-Ran Instrumented Falling Weight Impact Tester is sure to set new standards.




The Apparatus determines the impact damaged and resistance to materials using Force and Velocity transducers which impacts the specimen under investigation giving real time data to calculate the energy and depth of impact that is subject to the sample under test.


Conforming to ASTM D7136, D3763-02, ISO 6603 standards, typical materials tested are composites, fibre glass, rigid plastics, laminates and ceramics which makes it the ideal partner for Automotive, Aerospace and Construction industries as well as Universities.

Utilising both pneumatic and electrical functions the apparatus is extremely versatile. Variable drop heights of 2 meters and 3.35 mtrs maximum are standard through the range giving maximum impact velocities of 6.26 m/s and 8.1 m/s. With maximum impact energy ranges from 314J up to 1100J joules even the toughest of materials can easily be tested.

The Instrumented Falling Weight Impact Tester is ideal for product development and quality control within production, research and development labs and teaching institutions and will more than meet your testing requirements. Smaller & larger drop heights are available as well as larger bases to accept larger pipe diameters and Tup (Striker) shapes to customers individual requirements.

By changing the Supports and clamping mechanisms, along with the shape of the Tup, and variable weights the Ray-Ran Universal Falling Weight Impact Tester can be manufactured to meet any test specification or costumers requirement making the equipment truly bespoke. Typical Test fixtures available include

Pipe Testing “V” rest
The test is used for the examination of pipe sections and tubing for impact strength properties as complete segments of pipe. Sample diameters from as little as 12mm Ø up to 400mm Ø can be tested on the standard machine. The Pipe is supported in a 120° angled “V” support as is impacted by the load carrier in a single drop. The support rests can be manufactured to any test standard or customer requirement.

Flat Plate / Plaque Testing
Testing of flat plates or plaques such as laminates and composites can easily be tested using the flat plate clamping fixture. It is offered with various support rings to test to various international test standards and customers own specific testing requirements and can be either manually or pneumatically operated.

Fixtures for conducting Izod and Charpy tests are also available.

For specific component testing Ray-Ran can design and manufacture bespoke clamping fixtures to meet customers individual testing requirements and parameters.

The impact test result is presented in graphical and tabular forms within a fraction of a second of the impact event.  There is extensive automatic data analysis, as well as, user controlled advanced analysis options. The calculations are precise giving results of time, force, velocity, displacement and energy shown in graphical and tabular format.

Various fixtures are available including V rests for pipe and flat plate clamping systems which are available in both manual and pneumatic versions to cover a variety of test standards.
