The TQC Sheen Gel Strength Tester DV2400 measures yield strength and viscosity of thick paints, gels, putties, semi-solid materials and food products - the range of materials that fall outside the working range of conventional rotational viscometers. Used by paints and coatings QC laboratories, food producers (jams, jellies, dairy spreads), pharmaceutical and cosmetics QC labs (gels and ointments) and adhesive manufacturers, the DV2400 delivers reliable, repeatable yield-strength data via a rotating paddle spindle at 0.5-5.0 rpm. A four-line digital display with backlight, level adapter set, and interchangeable spindle range make it a straightforward addition to any QC workflow.

Manufactured by our TQC Sheen paint specialist testing brand, the TQC Sheen Gel Strength Tester DV2400 is a precision instrument for Viscosity Testing of thick paints, gels, putties and semi-solid materials that sit outside the working range of conventional rotational viscometers. A rotating paddle spindle drives the sample container and generates a torque reading calibrated to a 0-450 g/cm scale of yield strength.
Used by paints and coatings QC laboratories testing thixotropic and structured paints, food QC labs verifying jams, jellies, dairy spreads and gelled products, pharmaceutical QC teams testing gels and ointments, cosmetics QC labs testing creams and gel products, and adhesive manufacturers checking putties and paste-form adhesives – the DV2400 is a cross-industry QC tool for materials too thick for a Krebs or Brookfield viscometer.
A redesign of the earlier Sheen 414N gel strength tester, the DV2400 replaces the fixed 2 rpm of its predecessor with a variable 0.5-5.0 rpm speed range – so lower rpm and smaller spindles work with the thickest products, while higher rpm and larger spindles cover lower-viscosity gels in the same instrument. Cutter grips, handles and spindles are supplied ready to use.
Repeatable yield-strength data for QC audit. 2% full-scale accuracy and 1% full-scale repeatability across the 0-450 g/cm range give paint, food, pharma and cosmetics QC teams defensible yield-strength readings that stand up to customer, regulatory and internal audit – not a subjective touch-based assessment.
One instrument covers thick semi-solids and lower-viscosity gels. The 0.5-5.0 rpm variable speed range plus interchangeable spindle options mean the same instrument tests putties, thixotropic paints and structured gels at low rpm with small spindles, and lower-viscosity gels and creams at higher rpm with larger spindles – so R&D and QC teams working across a wide product portfolio do not need multiple instruments.
Bench-top footprint, simple setup, four-line backlit display. The DV2400 sits on a standard QC bench, the 250 ml sample can loads magnetically onto the turntable, and the four-line backlit display shows the reading clearly – so QC operators can run a gel-strength check in under a minute, between other tasks on the QC bench.
Gel strength testing is essential for evaluating the consistency, stability, and structural integrity of various materials. In food production, it plays a key role in ensuring proper texture, processing behavior, and shelf life. Beyond food, gel strength measurement is widely used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and adhesives to maintain product quality, optimize formulations, and ensure performance meets industry standards.
The DV2400 uses a calibrated-spring turntable and rotating paddle spindle to measure yield strength:
Alternative paddle formats are available for a wider range of material viscosities and textures. Resolution is 10 g/cm across the 0-450 g/cm scale.
Each DV2400 kit is supplied with:
Calibration oils and alternative spindle formats must be ordered separately – see Spares and Accessories below.
Gel strength testing uses industry-standard methods rather than a single ISO or ASTM specification – each industry (paints, food, pharma, cosmetics) has its own conventional test procedures. The DV2400 delivers repeatable yield-strength data compatible with in-house QC procedures across the industries listed above.

Gel strength testing measures the yield strength of semi-solid materials – the amount of force needed to disturb the material’s structure. Typical applications include thick paints and thixotropic coatings, food products (jellies, jams, dairy spreads, gelled desserts), pharmaceutical gels and ointments, cosmetic creams and gel products, and paste or putty-form adhesives. Yield strength readings correlate with product consistency and processing behavior, and are used across QC and R&D workflows to check batch consistency, tune formulations, and verify shelf-life stability.
Consistent yield strength is what tells your customers a batch of paint will still be thick enough to hold on a vertical wall, a batch of jam has the right spreadability, a pharmaceutical gel will stay put where it is applied, or a putty adhesive will not slump before it cures. Gel strength testing provides the QC data behind product consistency and shelf-life stability claims – and defensible readings matter as much for regulatory compliance in food, pharma and cosmetics as they do for customer QC in paints.
Gel strength can be measured using mechanical (rotating spindle, penetrometer), rheological (oscillatory rheometer) and physical (deformation-under-load) test methods, each suited to different material types. The TQC Sheen Gel Strength Tester DV2400 uses a rotating paddle spindle at 0.5-5.0 rpm to generate a torque reading against a calibrated 0-450 g/cm scale of yield strength – a practical, cost-effective mechanical method suitable for QC workflows across paints, food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and adhesives.
The DV2400 covers 0-450 g/cm of yield strength at a variable 0.5-5.0 rpm speed range, with 2% full-scale accuracy, 1% full-scale repeatability and 10 g/cm resolution. The operating temperature range is +5°C to +40°C. The standard spindle (DV2401) is a 2-blade paddle sized 20.0 x 40.0 mm (H x W) – alternative paddle formats are available for different material viscosities and container sizes.
The DV2400 ships with the Gel Strength Tester, a 250 ml sample can, the standard DV2401 spindle, a handle, a level adapter set (½ pint and 1 pint) and a 240V/110V power adapter. Additional or alternative TQC Sheen Gel Strength Tester Spindles for different material types are ordered separately – as are TQC Sheen Calibration Oils for periodic verification against reference values.
