Suitable for both base materials and finished products, the Emtec TSA Tissue Softness Analyzer is the perfect test and inspection solution for any kind of tissue paper. 

This handy tissue analyzer can assess the softness, elasticity and compressibility of tissue and fabrics as well as the ball burst strength, thickness and grammage, creating a well-rounded picture of the key tendencies of tissue papers.  

Why test tissue softness: main applications

The softness is a fundamental quality parameter of tissue and fabrics, it determines how the martials feel against the skin or how they will interact with any products they are used to wrap. Find out more in our guide to the basics of testing tissue softness.   

The Emtec TSA is capable of testing tissue paper, fabrics, leather and non-woven. It’s essential for production control product optimization as well as in comparison of products during the R&D process. It’s also very handy in the selection and control of pulp/fibers (hand sheet measurement). 

When tissue analysis is crucial

There are a number of industries where the measurement of tissue softness is paramount, including the production of hygiene tissues for commercial use and the testing or manufacture of tissue papers for use in flexible packaging solutions. 

The advantages of the Emtec TSA Tissue Softness Analyzer

Tissue softness may be characterized by e.g. smoothness, compressibility, stiffness and “crumpleability“. While it is possible to measure those various parameters separately, the Tissue Softness Analyzer TSA is able to measure them all.  

The benefits of an all-in-one tissue analysis solution 

When the parameters are measured separately, the results may be linked by complex functions and summarized to one value, which characterizes the subjectively felt softness in a more or less reliable way. It does, however, take more time and leave more room for error than the Tissue Softness Analyzer TSA, which simultaneously gathers all single relevant parameters which have an influence on the tissue softness.  

Additionally, this reliable tissue analyzer makes it possible to measure the elasticity, compressibility and ball burst strength.  

Automatic calculation  

Parameters for all values will be automatically calculated by a high-performance PC software, making it easy for the user to receive relevant and accurate results.  

Measuring tissue softness with the Emtec TSA

The measurement is a two-step process. The first step is sound analysis, where the head is lowered and the rotor turns, causing the blades to rub the sample. The generated sound is recorded and processed by the software to generate the TS7 and TS750 peaks and demonstrate the softness.  

The second step is the deformation measurement. The measuring head presses the rotor into the sample to a force of 600 mN. The distance the head travels is measured and used to determine the stiffness of the sheet. These results are then subjected to a series of calculations to assess the overall parameters of the sample.  

In addition to analyzing a wide range of parameters, our Tissue Softness Analyzer is also capable of measuring Ball Burst Strength according to DIN EN ISO 12625-9. Allowing you to ensure your materials are meeting this commonly accepted industry standard.
