Quality By Vision CHROMetal 9000 – Chrome (Cr) Coating Analysis

The CHROMetal 9000 is an industry-leading chrome plating thickness tester that uses a chemical testing process to inspect both T.F.S (Tin Free Steel) and TP (Tin Plate) coatings.

Developed by Quality by Vision, our specialist vision inspection brand, the CHROMetal 9000 chrome plating thickness tester  features high-tech electrolytic / coulometric hardware and software.

Our chrome plating thickness device is what you need to ensure the correct thickness of a chrome coating. It will also guide insightful R&D planning while tightening up your quality control processes.

CHROmetal cell options

You get a choice of two cell options when you use our versatile chrome plating thickness tester: manual/automatic single cell system and an automatic three cell system.

How does the CHROmetal work?

First up you insert your sample (strip, or actual sample) into the cell. Next the electrolytic fluid fills the cell, which is closed off. The measurement process can then proceed, inspecting: top only; top and bottom or 3x top and bottom measurements. Profiles are presented for each of the measurements.

During the measurement process, the chrome coating is deplated and removed from the sample’s surface. The CHROmetal 9000 then monitors the coating removal process, then calculates the amount of Chromium that was removed from the surface.

Chrome plating thickness test options

The CHROmetal 9000 lets you test using either the T.F.S (tin free steel) or TP (tin plating) standards – which have been optimized for each type of chromium coating.

Our innovative design ensures that you achieve quick and easy measurements with little operator knowledge required. When measuring chrome on tin a reading of 3-5 mg per sqm is acceptable; for TFS you’ll want a measurement of anything over 50 mg per sqm.

The CHROmetal talks your language!

A clever multi-linguist, the CHROmetal 9000 can be translated to your local language, free of charge.

A plateful of plating inspection options!

Across the Industrial Physics portfolio we have plenty of devices that are similar in function to the CHROmetal 9000.

One of these devices is the STANNOMetal 9000 coulometer. It offers you fast tin coating thickness and chrome coating thickness measurements, with exceptional accuracy – to one percent, or better!

Another popular device to check out is the FES-4000: Front End Station, which provides automated front end measurements on trimmed cans.

Gold-plated knowledge and experience!

We’re always pleased to share the knowledge we’ve gained over almost 100 years of working with metal packaging.

In the knowledgebase section of our website you’ll find lots of blogs about can inspection. For example, there’s this one on how to measure a double seam, or this piece which delves into different types of can inspection and how they’re achieved.

Then, if even a fraction as obsessed with metal packaging as we are…we think you’ll enjoy reading our popular history of a can timeline!

Success Stories

The problem

Canning production line problems are time consuming and costly. At some point many food and beverage companies encounter an issue with the seams of their cans, as was the case for a major brewery we work with.

The solution

Our customer needed a reliable machine to measure everything from seam thickness, height and gap through to countersink depth and overlap. The SEAMscan SPC System, an affordable, high-resolution tool for double seam inspection and measurement, solved their problem.

The result

‍Gicole Patterson of Blues City Brewery said:

“We have experienced very minimal downtime due to their (the IP technical support team’s) dedication! I can’t express enough how happy I am with their support!”
