Brought to you by TQC Sheen, our specialist testing brand, we can offer a range of laboratory viscosity cups in accordance with BS 3900 (1971) old specification.
These viscosity cups are reliable and easy to clean, designed for measuring the viscosity of paint, lacquers and other fluids. Each cup is made from anodized aluminum with a built-in nozzle.
This range of viscosity cups is designed according to BS 3900: Part A6, 1971, which is the old edition of the method. The later edition of specification BS 3900 (1996) has been replaced by the ISO 2431 standard, which we can also provide viscosity cups for – check out the range of ISO 2431 viscosity cups here.

The 1971 edition of the BS 3900 specification was suited for cups designed with a flow time range of 30 – 300 seconds (for break point method*) and 30 – 200 seconds (for fixed method **).
*Break point: The timing is taken at the first break in the continuous flow of the sample.
**Fixed volume: For this method, the cup is filled as normal, but timing is stopped after a fixed volume (50ml) of sample has passed through the cup orifice.
For optimum performance, it is recommended to use the cups within a flow time range of 30 – 100 seconds (as per table above). Using the cups for samples with flow above 100 – 300 seconds is not recommended, as the linearity is not proportional to higher viscosity products.
Our viscosity cups can be used to measure inks and coatings, liquids, liquid foods and beverages. They’re relied upon by our customers for accurate testing of a diverse range of products – from cosmetics and food to automotive paints.
Through TQC Sheen, our paint testing specialist brand, we can provide a wide range of viscosity cups of all viscosity testing requirements. Some of the options to pour through include our ISO 2431 Viscosity Cups, our range of laboratory style DIN 53211 Viscosity cups, as well as ASTM D1200 Immersion Ford Viscosity Cups.
We can also provide all the viscosity testing accessories you’ll need, such as tripod stands and temperature control jackets.
We’ve been making viscosity cups to test all types of materials for many decades. We like to share the insight we’ve gained with our customers.
Check out the knowledgebase section of our website. Here you’ll find articles that delve into viscosity testing best practices.
For example, there’s this blog that demonstrates how to perform a viscosity test. Then, as a follow-up, why not read this piece, which investigates the different types of viscometers available?
The TQC Sheen Digital Stopwatch is an accurate and reliable stopwatch, with a clear display, large digits, split times and a resolution to 1/100th of a second.
Our TQC Sheen Ring Stand for Viscosity Cups is a solid stainless steel ring stand to support your viscosity cups.
Our TQC Sheen Tripod Stand for Viscosity Cups is a stainless steel viscosity testing stand that’s suitable for ASTM, DIN, AFNOR, and ISO laboratory viscosity cups.
