Manufactured by our TQC Sheen paint testing specialist brand, the Bresle Test Kit (SP7310) is a portable field kit for detecting soluble salt contamination on blast-cleaned steel surfaces prior to coating application. Salt trapped under a coating attracts moisture through its hygroscopic nature – causing corrosion, pitting and coating failure – and cannot be seen by the naked eye. The Bresle Method (ISO 8502-6, ISO 8502-9) is the international standard technique for measuring this contamination in milligrams per square meter.
Used by marine coating surveyors, offshore and pipeline coating inspectors, shipyard coating QC teams, protective coating applicators in oil and gas, and blast-cleaning contractors doing pre-coating surface verification – the Bresle Test Kit supports Corrosion Testing and pre-coating Coating Testing applications where blast-cleaned surfaces may look clean but carry chloride, sulfate or nitrate contamination from air pollution, maritime environment exposure, or contaminated blast media.

The Bresle Method is the international standard technique for measuring soluble salt contamination on blast-cleaned steel surfaces before coating application, described in ISO 8502-6 and ISO 8502-9. A self-adhesive latex patch is applied to the surface, filled with deionized water via a syringe, worked through the patch to dissolve any surface salts, then extracted and measured for conductivity. The TQC Sheen Bresle Test Kit (SP7310) provides everything needed to run the test – digital conductivity meter, 25 Bresle patches, 6 x 25ml beakers, 200ml distilled water, 20ml syringe with needle, calibration and rinse solution, and a magnetic Bresle test spot marker. The meter reads the combined conductivity of dissolved chlorides, sulphates and nitrates.
The kit complies with ISO 8502-6 (extraction of soluble contaminants for analysis – the Bresle method), ISO 8502-9 (field method for the conductometric determination of water-soluble salts), and ISO 11127-6 (methods for testing of non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives – water-soluble contaminants). Together these cover both the surface contamination assessment before coating and the contamination check on blast media in use – so the same kit supports incoming abrasive QC, in-process blast-media checks and pre-coating surface verification.
The digital conductivity meter supplied with the Bresle Test Kit covers 0.1 to 20,000 mg/m² using the DSP (Direct Sample Procedure) method, with 0.1 mg/m² resolution and 1% full-scale accuracy. Operating temperature range is 0 to 50°C with a normalization temperature of 25°C. The meter is IP67-rated for field use. Each Bresle patch has a test area of 12.5 cm² (1,250 mm²) with a 2.5 ml nominal volume. Consult the appropriate standard (ISO 8502-6 or -9) for correct test execution and result interpretation – the meter reports conductivity which is then converted to salt concentration based on the reporting convention you use (measured as sodium chloride, mixed salts, or chlorides only).
Three practical points make or break Bresle results: use only the supplied deionized water (or TQC Sheen replacement 200ml or 500ml bottles) – tap or distilled water skews readings; work the syringe through the patch enough times to fully dissolve surface salts (typical practice is at least 4 fill-and-extract cycles); and record whether you are reporting conductivity as sodium chloride, mixed salts, or chlorides only, since the calculation factors differ. The three consumables that get used up in routine Bresle testing are the Bresle Patches (LD6515, box of 25 – each patch is single-use), the deionized water (200ml or 500ml replacement bottles), and periodically the calibration solution for the conductivity meter. Order frequency depends on your test volume – a QC team running 10-20 tests per week typically reorders patches monthly and deionized water bi-monthly.
