TQC Sheen Bend Test Conical Mandrel Pro

A precision-machine bend tester that offers an easy way to determine the elasticity or resistance of a coating, paint or varnish.

Accurate bend testing

The TQC Bend Test Conical Mandrel Pro is an easy-to-use tool capable of bend testing panels in order to assess the elasticity or resistance of a coating, paint or varnish to cracking, elongation and/or detachment from a metal test panel. It can test in accordance with ISO 6860 and ASTM D522.

The test panel is bent over a conical shaped mandrel and, through its deformation, it’s possible to examine the elasticity range of a coating over any diameter between 3.1 and 38 mm in one single test.

Bend testing for inks and coatings

This fast and efficient bend tester can be used to assess a wide range of inks and coatings on a variety of metal test panels, making it a useful component of any comprehensive QA process for laboratories and manufacturers. It is particularly useful for the automotive industry, where smooth paint jobs are key, and for the developers of paints, inks and coatings for a multitude of uses.

How the mandrel tester works

It’s very straightforward – the sample panel is secured to the apparatus by means of a quick lever handle that locks and unlocks the panel in a split second, with a simple manual movement.

How to use the Bend Test Conical Mandrel Pro

  1. Apply the paint film on a test panel of max. 100 x 180 mm, and a thickness of max. 0.8mm. Coat and dry film carefully.
  2. Position the apparatus on the table with the clenching wheel on the left side.
  3. Position the apparatus so that the fixation clamps are facing forwards.
  4. Loosen the fixation clamp and move the bending-handle in the front direction so it is positioned at the side as the fixation clamp.
  5. Position the test panel with the coating facing forwards (direction of operator) between the conical mandrel and the steel bending bar in such a way that the panel can be secured in place with the clamping device and tighten it with the clamp.
  6. Now slowly move the bending-handle to the other side of the apparatus thus bending the test panel over the conical mandrel.
  7. Visually observe the test panel and check for cracks. If any cracks have occurred, note the diameter of the beginning and end of the crack.
  8. Loosen fixation clamp and remove test panel.

The Problem

When your customers must be able to rely on your inks and coatings there’s no margin for error in your test and inspection processes. So, settling for second-rate equipment and advice is a risky business!

The Solution

With several dedicated inks and coatings testing brands in the Industrial Physics family, our industry-leading product portfolio and expertise is even relied upon by leading paint testing laboratories.

The Result

Artur Palasz, R&D Director at Spektrochem, said:

Many of our customers appreciate Industrial Physics equipment, because it is a world-class apparatus that they know and use in their laboratories. Excellent technical contact, perfect customer service and fast order processing time are undoubtedly additional advantages that determine the choice of Industrial Physics as our permanent supplier of laboratory equipment today and in the future.”
