When you need to know how much pressure your materials and components will withstand before they burst, our ABT-3100 burst tester provides all the answers.
Developed by CMC-KUHNKE, our metal packaging inspection company, this semi-automated burst / buckle tester is a fast and powerful bursting strength tester.
The ABT-3100 is one of the best burst testers in the industry. It was designed to check the pressure at which an aerosol can’s end will buckle and burst. It’s ideal for the burst testing of two and three piece cans and it can be adapted to suit monobloc, PET, and aluminum bottles and aerosol cans with non-standard openings.
Burst testing is a catch all term that can refer to lots of different testing techniques. You might also hear it referred to as rupture testing.
Our burst test and inspection machines give accurate, repeatable results under controlled conditions. You get an accurate picture of how your materials will react to the demands placed on them with quick and convenient burst pressure test solutions that fit right into your QA process.
Our bursting strength tester uses 50bar test pressure that can be programmed with up to 60 fully customized test types.
From automatic detection of buckle and burst through to automatic assignment of top or bottom burst. You can even hold at set pressures or measure the pressure drop at the time of a burst metal buckle. Plus its completely self-contained with an internal water supply
We make a wide range of burst tester devices and related accessories. For example, check out the SEAMscan SPC system for aerosols or the Quality By Vision MDA – Multidimensional Automatic Gauge for aerosol cans.
We like to share the lessons learnt over many decades of making burst pressure testers. Check out this Industrial Physics burst and rupture testing guide, or this piece on how double seam defects can dent your reputation and finances. Then, just for fun, why not check out our history of a can timeline to see how manufacturing has evolved over the years?
To use the ABT-3100 burst tester, just place your sample in the specially designed holder, which allows it to hang freely.
Your bursting strength tester then fills the aerosol can with water automatically to a pre-programmed pressure, then the programmed test sequence begins.
The burst metal values are recorded automatically for top buckle, bottom buckle and the overall burst pressures. You can even program one or two thresholds into the burst testing sequence, so your sample can be held at a desired pressure for a specified length of time.
Once the inspection is complete you can evaluate your results on screen. You can graph some findings and send them via data transfer directly into Visionary QC or other burst metal data acquisition software.

Poor calibration services → Selected Industrial Physics as a service partner → Superior service achieved! ✓
Proper calibration of your inspection devices is essential for a long and accurate life of service. A leading pet food manufacturer discovered this when shoddy servicing created a raft of problems with their burst and creep testing equipment.
Our experts quickly identified and rectified the pre-existing problems. Now, they’re delighted to rely upon a trusted test and inspection partner with Industrial Physics.
Scott Chambers, Quality Technician at Mars Inc., said,
“I was very happy to be one of the first companies to participate in the mobile calibration program. Ryan Moreno was my technician and was very personable, knowledgeable, and accommodating. The calibrations he performed were very efficient. I like having a technician on site one on one to answer any question I had. Also, not having to ship my BT-Integra units was a major plus. looking forward to future visits at Mars Petcare KKC.”
