What is Tire Testing?

Tire testing is a key part of the automotive testing process. After all, without them, a car isn’t going anywhere! 

Thorough testing can tell you just how rubber and polymer composites will behave when they are exposed to different surfaces – key knowledge when assessing safety, durability and cost concerns.  

What are tires tested for? 

There are a wide range of things tires are tested for, including grip, wear, rolling resistance and behavior. This helps to determine how they will perform when they are on the road. Tires are also tested for things like noise, which is ideally kept low for the comfort of the driver and everyone else.  

How are tires tested?

There are several different stages of testing for each tire. First, the raw materials will be tested to ensure that they are suitable. This includes things like including tensile and tear tests. This is where rubber testing solutions are particularly valuable.  

Next come adhesion tests. Tires are made up from many layers and it is important that those layers are properly bonded and able to withstand the kind of tension they will be subjected to.  

There will also be a series of impact tests. These are designed to ensure that when wheels hit against everything from curbs to stones, they can withstand the impact without bursting.  

Finally, there is a round of wear and fatigue tests that are used to estimate how long a tire will remain intact and useable, to see if they will meet consumer demand.

UTMs
