Definition: Wet coating thickness measurement is the process of measuring the thickness of applied coating or paint layer immediately after it has been applied to a metal coil substrate — before the coated product enters the curing oven and dries. This is achieved using non-contact, optical sensor-based technology positioned inline at the point of application.
Why it matters: In coil coating production lines, coatings travel at high speed through application rollers before passing through a curing oven. Traditional dry measurement systems are positioned 100–150 metres in coil routing distance downstream from the application point. This means quality issues are not detected until significant scrap has already been produced. Wet measurement closes this gap, catching problems in the first metre of production rather than after hundreds of metres of waste. Wet measurement also has additional advantages – this includes measuring complex paints like crinkles and metallics more easily and the coating application itself can be automated with abundance of real time live measurement feedback from SpecMetrix inline systems.
How it works: SpecMetrix wet measurement systems use optical sensing technology to deliver 100+ measurements per second across the full width of the coil. The system provides real time inline measurements and is non-contact, non-destructive, and operator-independent — providing continuous, traceable data for every metre of every coil produced.

Wet coating thickness measurement is the process of measuring a coating layer immediately after it has been applied to the coil substrate, before it enters the curing oven. Dry film thickness measurement, by contrast, is performed after the coil has travelled through the curing oven and the coating has fully hardened.
The critical difference is timing — and the distance that separates the two measurement points. On a typical coil coating line, the curing oven is 100 to 150 metres long. This means that with dry measurement, any coating application problem will not be detected until 100–150 metres of coated material has already been produced. At production line speeds of 60–120 metres per minute, that represents between one and two and a half minutes of continuous waste before a correction can be made.
Wet measurement eliminates this lag. By positioning the sensor immediately after the application rollers, issues are detected in the first metre of production — before the problem compounds into significant scrap. This enables immediate process correction, rather than retrospective fault-finding.
There is also an accuracy advantage for certain coating types. Crinkle and metallic finishes show extremely high surface texture variability when measured dry, making dry measurement unreliable for these products. Wet measurement captures an accurate thickness reading before the surface texture fully develops, providing reliable data regardless of finish type.
In practice, wet and dry measurement are not competing approaches but complementary approaches — many plants use both. Wet measurement provides real-time process control at the point of application; dry measurement confirms final compliance. However, for plants that currently rely on dry measurement alone, the addition of wet measurement upstream typically delivers the most significant improvement in quality control and material efficiency. Wet measurement also helps in automating the paint application process with closed loop control since there is measurement feedback at the point of application.
SpecMetrix provides real-time, in-line monitoring, enabling immediate process adjustments. It works on a wide range of substrates and coatings, reduces waste and rejects, and simplifies compliance, delivering quick ROI and improved product quality.
SpecMetrix provides exclusive in‑line coating thickness measurement systems for production lines, enabling manufacturers to monitor coating uniformity in real time. Their technology measures almost any coating or substrate—from metal coils and flat sheets to films—helping customers improve quality, reduce costs, and optimise process efficiency.
For crinkle and metallic finishes, wet measurement is not simply an improvement over dry measurement — it is the only technically reliable approach.
Crinkle coatings are specifically formulated to produce a textured surface during the curing process. Metallic paints contain reflective particles distributed through the coating layer. Both of these characteristics create significant surface texture variability in the dried coating. When measured dry using contact or optical methods, this variability produces inconsistent thickness readings with high measurement noise. The data cannot reliably represent the average coating weight applied because the surface irregularities dominate the measurement signal.
Wet measurement solves this by measuring the coating before these surface characteristics have developed. Immediately after application, the coating is still in a relatively uniform liquid state. The measurement captures the actual applied thickness accurately, without interference from the surface texture that will develop during curing.
For plants producing crinkle and metallic product ranges — which represent a significant share of architectural and building envelope coil coating — this is a practical quality control requirement, not a technical preference. Without wet measurement, achieving reliable, consistent quality data on these finishes is not achievable with current dry measurement technology.
Compliance in coil coating depends on being able to demonstrate that every coil produced meets the specified coating thickness requirements — not just the coils that were sampled and tested, but every coil on every production run. Traditional sampling-based approaches have an inherent limitation: they only measure what they measure. The gaps between sample points are invisible to quality systems.
Wet measurement with a system like SpecMetrix provides 100% inspection coverage across both the length and width of every coil. With 100+ measurements per second captured continuously, there are no blind spots. Every metre of production generates measurement data, and every data point is logged, timestamped, and traceable.
This creates an audit-ready record that demonstrates compliance with complete confidence — not confidence based on sampling probability, but confidence based on complete evidence. When an audit requires proof that coating specifications were met, the data exists for every single coil rather than a statistical sample.
For plants supplying to customers with stringent quality requirements — particularly in construction, automotive, and appliance sectors — this level of traceability is increasingly expected rather than merely desirable. Wet measurement systems provide the data infrastructure that modern quality management demands, without adding manual data collection burden or operator dependency.
Wet Film Thickness (WFT) The thickness of a coating layer measured in its uncured, liquid state immediately after application. Expressed in micrometres (µm). Wet film thickness provides the most accurate baseline for controlling coating application because it measures the material as applied, before curing-related changes affect the surface. Dry Film Thickness (DFT) The thickness of a fully…
In coil coating, the margin between a profitable line and a costly one is often measured in micrometres. Apply too little paint and you risk compliance failures, customer rejections, and brand damage. Apply too much and you waste expensive raw materials on every single coil. For decades, manufacturers have relied on offline dry film thickness measurement to manage this balance —…
