What is the definition of a Karsten tube penetration test?

The test is defined as a way to measure water absorption using a Karsten tube, sealant and water. It has a long history as a simple and fast way to test coating porosity in dielectric coatings on conductive substates, including concrete. The results can be charted to compare various surfaces.  

How do you perform a Karsten tube penetration test?

The Karsten tube penetration test method includes placing the dome tester against the surface that is being tested and forming a seal around the joint using a plastic sealing material. The sealing material is pressed around the rim of the dome until it is watertight. The dome is then filled with water to the zero mark and then pressed lightly. The water level is then closely measured to see how much is absorbed by the surface.    

How accurate is the Karsten tube penetration test? 

Karsten tube penetration test accuracy is high, as long the test is carried out correctly. There is some room for user error. Its main advantage is how simple, fast, repeatable, and non-destructive it is.  

How long does the Karsten tube penetration test take?

The Karsten tube penetration test takes, on average, anywhere between a few minutes and a few hours, depending on how absorbent the surface is. The user registers the volume of water absorbed during chosen time span, typically 30, 60 or 180 min, to determine how quickly water is penetrating the surface.

This test is often used to determine how vulnerable a building or building materials are to water penetration. This can indicate how a building might behave in adverse weather conditions, such as during a hurricane or rainstorm.
