Closed loop control in coil coating

Closed Loop Control in Coil Coating with SpecMetrix

Closed loop control is establishing an automated process where real-time coating thickness measurements are fed back to the coating line’s controls, so the line adjusts itself automatically to dynamically adjust to the target coating weight. Instead of relying on manual control, manual checks or offline sampling, the line responds to variation as it happens, reducing waste, improving consistency, and protecting quality before non-conforming product is made.

The measurement is the part that makes this possible. SpecMetrix in-line coating measurement systems provide the real-time layer thickness data in a non-contact, non-destructive way providing thickness readings taken across the coil width, at 100+ or more measurements per second, on either wet or dry coatings and paints. That continuous stream of data is passed to the line control system, which uses it to adjust coating application dynamically.

SpecMetrix provides highly precise, real-time measurements. The control mechanism itself is typically implemented by the coil line manufacturer (OEM), the customer’s own engineering team, or an automation integrator, and SpecMetrix works with all of them to configure the data output for control use.

For quality, R&D, and operations experts in coil coating, closed loop control turns measurement into action. It is part of how Industrial Physics helps protect the integrity of the coating, the coil, and the brands that depend on them.

FAQs

  • It is a process where real-time coating thickness measurements are fed back to the line controls, which adjust coating application automatically to hold the target coating weight. The line corrects variation as it happens, reducing waste and protecting quality.

  • It provides the measurement layer. SpecMetrix in-line systems deliver precise, real-time thickness readings across the coil at 100 or more measurements per second, and that data is passed to the line control system, which uses it to adjust application dynamically.

  • Wet measurement is usually recommended. Measuring immediately after application removes the lag before the oven, so corrections reach the next pass of coating, issues are caught before curing, and the line stabilizes faster after a grade change. Dry measurement works where the line layout requires it, with more response lag.

  • Fixed probes are recommended. They measure continuously from set positions across the coil, giving uninterrupted feedback, whereas a traversing probe must sweep and return before generating a new reading, which slows the control loop.

  • SpecMetrix provides the measurement; the control is usually implemented by the coil line manufacturer (OEM), the customer’s engineering team, or an automation integrator. SpecMetrix works with all of them and can recommend integration partners, with an on-site assessment to determine the right approach.
