Pigment Testing

Proper pigment testing of the paints and coatings you use is an essential check to ensure their appearance and performance.

Because there’s so many types of paints and coatings on the market, there’s various methods to determine pigment content. It’s important to use just the right quantity in your formulated products and our reliable pigment testing equipment will help you to achieve this.

Perfect pigment testing techniques

Here are just some of the many pigment testing solutions that we offer at Industrial Physics.

Pigment testing color spectrophotometers

The ColorTouch® X 45 is the only TAPPI brightness and color spectrophotometer designed specifically for the pulp and paper industry. Built by our optical specialist brand Technidyne, it’s our pigment inspection solution for brightness and color values.

It combines a powerful set of tools to meet the demands of the brightness, color, color difference and fluorescence markets. Plus the expanded wavelength range of this pigment testing device provides a higher level of accuracy and capabilities than the alternatives available.

Fineness of grind pigment testing

Fineness of grind pigment testing is a simple yet effective way to measure the uniformity of pigment particles in a paint or coating. .

Why is this important? Before your pigments are mixed into a liquid form for dispersion, they’ll typically need to be ground or milled into fine particles. You’ll need effective pigment inspection to know the physical properties of the particles, and the point at which their size exceeds the thickness of the film itself when painted, spread, or sprayed.

Fineness of grind pigment testing is vital to enable you to create reliable and repeatable wet films and apply them with repeatable consistency. Our TQC grindometer is a precision fineness of grind gauge. It’s great for pigment inspection as it will determine the particle size and fineness of many materials like paints, lacquers, pigments or filler.

Viscosity pigment testing

A paint or coating’s viscosity plays an important role in pigment dispersion. The amount of pigment you use will impact upon the viscosity of your paste: too much causes problems with mixing and a reduced flow rate; too little produces poor dispersion quality and efficiency.

The sheen viscosity cup immersion zahn is an ASTM D1084 compliant range of stainless steel (SS303) viscosity cups. Our durable cups are precision engineered and offer good repeatability for viscosity testing.

Each durable viscosity cup has a fixed stainless steel inner cavity nozzle and handle and comes with a protective storage case.
