Recently, Chris Beauchene, Quality Manager at Packaging Personified Inc., approached Industrial Physics with a specific query around options that would improve efficiencies when it comes to OTR (oxygen transmission rate) testing.  

Rocky Alston, Midwest Regional Account Manager, at Industrial Physics, explains, “Oxygen transmission rate testing is a critical application for a company like Practical Packaging Inc. When Chris approached me, he explained that the company had wanted to test a selection of their new products at a higher volume than ever before. He also expressed a desire to reduce actionable testing time with new and improved software.”

We recently updated the software for the tool – and a new functionality that comes with the update involves the ability for customers to make decisions based on trendline data. The end result means that customers are not only able to experience faster testing times, but they will also achieve more reliable results.”

In addition to this, Rocky also identified another benefit for Chris and his team that he believed would solve the problems they’d been discussing.  

The sample mounting station allows for multiple types of packages and materials to be tested – allowing customers to introduce new types of samples into their testing process with extreme ease. This is an ideal accessory for a company like Practical Packaging Inc. 

Data-based decisions 

Almost immediately, the Systech 8101e OTR solution proved to be a success. According to Rocky, “The instrument provided trendline data analysis that allowed the team to make swift decisions based on live data they were receiving – ultimately, this meant that costly time spent on customer analysis was saved. 

The sample mounting station also rapidly improved processes – further improving the ease and speed of testing.” 

Chris expressed his delight at adopting the solution from Industrial Physics, 

“Testing with the new unit has been great. We’ve run more testing than I’d anticipated, including in the process of trialing at least 13 new raw materials we’re evaluating. Our team is appreciating the increased amount of information we’re able to pull, compared to our old unit.

Additionally, being able to see the trendline has allowed us to reduce the time it takes to get an actionable idea of where our OTR reading is going to land, which has helped us achieve a minor reduction in scrap rates. All in, we’re very happy with the unit.”
