Just Born Quality Confections

Optical Testing

Eagle Vision Systems

When the owners of a leading US confectionery company needed to solve a candy waste problem, they found the ideal solution in the Dirty Tray Vision System from Eagle Vision.

Realistic ROI in just 12 months, or less

Within just 12 months of purchasing our unique and innovative device the team at Just Born Quality Confections were able to report a strong return on investment.

Protecting the integrity of our customer’s brands and products is at the heart of everything Industrial Physics stands for. And in order to do this effectively, it’s vital we’re at the forefront of technology.

When providing first-rate, cutting edge test and inspection solutions to manufacturers, production lines, and laboroatories across the globe, innovation is everything. That’s why we partnered with the production manager of a starch molding plant to create the Dirty Tray Vision system (DTV) – the only instrument designed specifically to reduce waste in starch molding.

Why is this type of testing important?

The Eagle Vision DTV system was created to solve a lingering, specific problem – an issue that many candy manufacturers have just come to accept. With our finger on the pulse, we’d been aware that unnecessary candy waste was a big issue in the confectionery industry. And we wanted to do something.

Our investigations determined that there was no specific test designed for such starch molding analysis and a clear opportunity to help our customers emerged. So, we teamed up with aforementioned plant production manager Luuk Hilhorst, who owns LHT Consultancy, to bring a cost-effective solution to market.

Jelly bottom bother! Essentially, the DTV system prevents a starch molding line from depositing into a starch tray, if it hasn’t been completely filled. If you start the process with an improperly filled tray then you will deposit jelly on the bottom of the tray. Over time this builds up.

So, what’s the problem? Simply put, you’ll be left with a lump of jelly. It can either be so thick that the molds from the moldboard will hit the jelly and break, or jelly will stick to the mold and make a bad imprint.

Our DTV system has all the ingredients to significantly reduce your candy waste problem. It does this by combining state-of-the-art cameras and advanced technology. By scanning each and every candy tray it prevents dirty trays, stopping them in their tracks before a problem arises.

The Industrial Physics story

So, we’ve told you a bit about how our DTV system brought sweetness to the lives of the Just Born team. But how did the collaboration with Luuk come about?

Hitting a sweet spot in testing We will let Luuk take it from here: “After I decided to see if I could solve this serious problem, I challenged several test and inspection companies with vision technology expertise to find a solution,” he said.

“There were a few Dutch and Belgian suppliers that had tried…but it wasn’t easy! One of the tricky issues related to the possibility of a dust explosion. After meeting with a number of organizations, it became clear that partnering with Industrial Physics / Eagle Vision was the best option. The team’s expertise was unrivaled, and they were equipped with dedicated, expert engineers.”

In 2017 Luuk introduced the team at Just Born Quality Confections to the DTV system. He knew that it had already helped many giants of the confectionery world to significantly cut down on their waste problems.

The team at Industrial Physics worked closely with Just Born to install the system and ensure adequate training was in place. As a genuine partner, it’s critical that we don’t just supply our customers with the right equipment, but we provide a service that truly allows them to get the results they need.

Don’t just take our word for it!

The team at Just Born were delighted with the machine, as a spokesperson for the company explained:

“The Eagle Vision system has proven to be a reliable and functional addition to our jumbo mogul. Quality of product, reduction of scrap and long-term operating cost have all been enhanced by this addition to our system.”

‍Andre Jansen, Global Sales Manager at Industrial Physics said:

“The outcome of this successful collaboration was an excellent result for Just Born and the industry as a whole. Not only from an economical standpoint through the cost savings, but also from an ethical point of view in terms of a significant reduction in waste.”

Thanks to the sweet success this third generation, family-owned business enjoyed with the DTV system, they were keen to replicate the results. So they soon went on to purchase a second system for another production line.

André continued:

“Once again, we were happy to support the team with all their needs – ensuring they had the tools to make the most of this instrument on a new line. Whether that means traveling to customer premises to conduct additional training, or offering remote options, we’re here to support our customers.”

“I’m proud to be working with a team that fosters innovation and expertise to deliver forward-thinking solutions to the market.”

At Industrial Physics, we’re here to protect the integrity of packaging, products, and materials for manufacturers, production lines and laboratories - all over the world. For us, that goes beyond simply supplying test and inspection instruments. It’s about being there for our customers. And acting as a true partner – answering questions, sharing our knowledge, and perhaps most importantly, reacting quickly if something goes wrong.

We like to share our expertise at Industrial Physics and we have written countless articles, blogs and whitepapers across all the industries we serve.
