Description

Manufactured by United Testing Systems, our advanced materials testing brand, the DSTM Series is a family of low-to-mid capacity table-top universal testing machines available in four force capacities: DSTM-5 (5 kN), DSTM-10 (10 kN), DSTM-20 (20 kN) and DSTM-25 (25 kN). All four variants share the same dual-column architecture, DragonFly UTS software and DAQC4 hardware controller as the larger DFM floor-model range.

Used by plastics and polymer QC laboratories (bags, films, packaging), rubber and elastomer manufacturers, textile and nonwoven producers, medical device R&D groups, adhesive tape and label QC teams, small-fastener manufacturers, and education and research laboratories – the DSTM Series supports Tensile TestingCompression TestingCreep to Fail Testing and Tear Testing across plastics, rubber, textiles, adhesives, films, foams, wood products and related low-force applications.

The DSTM Series is designed to sit on a standard laboratory bench – 63.6 inches (1,615 mm) high by 26.2 inches (665 mm) wide by 15.5 inches (397 mm) deep, weighing 350 lbs (160 kg). A versatile floor stand is available for locations without a suitable bench. Twin ball screw drive with closed-loop servo controls provides ±0.25 mm maximum lateral motion, and DAQC4 hardware with 1,000 Hz data acquisition matches the DFM Series specifications.

Why it matters

Defensible low-to-mid force test data. Speed accuracy ±0.1% of set speed, position accuracy the greater of 0.025 mm or 0.025% of movement – the same accuracy grade as the floor-model DFM Series.

DragonFly UTS pre-configured for polymer and film standards. Test method library covers ASTM D412, D882, D1708, D1876, F2516, ISO 178, ISO 527 series and more – pre-configured at factory before shipping.

Table-top footprint, fits standard QC bench. 63.6 x 26.2 x 15.5 inch dimensions and 160 kg weight sit on a normal laboratory bench without dedicated floor space. Optional floor stand available where bench space is limited.

What can you do with a universal testing machine?

Universal testing machines study the characteristics of many types of materials, components and structures. They’re helpful, multi-purpose instruments that can support your test and inspection programs – whatever industry you work in.

Creep to fail, Compression testing, tensile testing & tear testing

The ‘universal’ part of the title relates to the many types of tests that can be undertaken with these multi-use devices: from creep to fail and compression testing and from tensile testing to tear testing.

Tensile strength

Tensile strength is the maximum stress that a material can withstand while being stretched or pulled before breaking.

  • Yes, there are several different types of UTMs. There are a few different types of machines, including electromechanical (Electric Motor) driven systems and servo-hydraulic driven systems. Not sure which suits your needs? Check out our guide to types of UTMs

If you’re struggling to make sense of the names or components of your machine, hopefully after reading our UTM glossary you gained more knowledge.

  • There are a wide variety of tests that UTMs are capable of carrying out – the clue is in the name! Some of the most common universal testing machine tests are:
    • Pull-out tests
    • Bending tests
    • Hysteresis tests
    • Tensile tests
    • Compression tests
    • Adhesion tests

  • Universal Testing Machines are capable of testing the properties of a wide range of materials, including foam, rubber, plastics, and polymers, wood, metals and textiles.

  • UTMs are designed to help users test a wide range of materials or product components to meet a variety of industry standards. They are also sometimes used to test materials that do not have a standardized testing method.

  • UTMs are designed to help users test a wide range of materials or product components to meet a variety of industry standards. They are also sometimes used to test materials that do not have a standardized testing method.

  • Choose based on the maximum expected test force plus a safety margin. DSTM-5 (5 kN) suits thin films, textiles, small adhesive samples and biomedical materials; DSTM-10 (10 kN) covers most standard plastic film and rubber elastomer testing; DSTM-20 (20 kN) handles thicker plastics, small composites and mid-range adhesive lap-shear tests; DSTM-25 (25 kN) is the top of the DSTM range before stepping up to the DTM Series (50-100 kN) or DFM Series (100-600 kN).

  • Yes. The DSTM Series is 63.6 inches high, 26.2 inches wide, 15.5 inches deep, and weighs 350 lbs (160 kg). It sits on a standard laboratory or QC bench without dedicated floor space or foundation loading. Where a bench is not available, a versatile floor stand is available separately that supports the DSTM frame’s weight and sets the grips and test area at an operator-friendly height.

  • DragonFly UTS ships with a large test method library covering ASTM, ISO, BS, EN, GB, DIN and related standards. Common DSTM Series pre-configurations include ASTM D412 (rubber elastomer tensile), ASTM D882 (thin plastic sheeting), ASTM D1708 (plastic microtensile), ISO 527 series (plastic tensile), ISO 178 (plastic flexure), ASTM D1876 (T-peel adhesion), and ASTM F2516 (nitinol wire). Contact us to confirm pre-configured methods.

The DAQC4 hardware controller supports plug-and-play expansion modules – up to 14 additional channels for extensometers, multi-point/multi-axis strain gauges, laser, optical and video capture systems. Environmental chambers for high or low temperature testing are also available. Because expansion is plug-and-play with automatic recognition, additions can be made after initial installation without controller replacement.

  • All three ranges share the same DragonFly UTS software, DAQC4 hardware controller, dual column architecture and closed-loop servo drive – so accuracy, data quality and operator interface are consistent. The differences are force capacity and physical form factor: DSTM (5-25 kN) is table-top, DTM (50-100 kN) is mid-capacity table-top, DFM (100-600 kN) is floor-model electromechanical, and DHFM (600-2000 kN) is floor-model hydraulic.
