How to measure coefficient of friction   

A friction tester, also called a coefficient-of-friction (COF) tester, is used for measuring sheet-like substrates. It does this by determining the angle of inclination at which one substrate affixed to a sled will begin to slide/slip against the surface of another substrate of a similar material. 

Simple and reliable COF testing process

Using the Slide Angle Coefficient of Friction (COF) Tester 32-25 features a motorized inclined plane by its electric motor at a rate of 1.5 ± 0.5º per second until the test block begins to slide. The initial movement of the sled reveals the slide angle or coefficient of static friction of the material.  

Slide Angle Coefficient of Friction Designed for accuracy with photo-optical detection

When the test block begins to slide a photo-optical sensor automatically stops the inclined plane so you can read the slide angle result. 

A variety of factors can affect the slide angle measurements including abrasion, coatings, varnishes, printing and most importantly humidity.

The Slide Angle Coefficient of Friction (COF) Tester 32-25 measures slide angle or coefficient of static friction 0 to 80 degree angle. A horizontal plane method is also available to measure static and kinetic coefficient of friction.

  • The Slide Angle COF Tester 32-25 is designed for measuring the static coefficient of friction of sheet-like materials using the inclined plane method. It’s ideal for paper, plastic films, packaging films, paperboard, corrugated materials, and similar substrates.

  • The device gradually increases the incline of a motorized plane at a controlled rate (1.5 ± 0.5º per second). A sample is mounted on a sled and placed on the inclined plane. When the sled begins to slide, the angle at which it moves is recorded as the static coefficient of friction.
